Harness vs Martingale Collar for my Greyhound?

My 6 year old Greyhound is having some trouble with collars. They burn the skin on his neck, and some areas on the neck are actually hairless due to the collar (nylon martingale, given to us by the Greyhound agency). Would a large harness do any better/ hurt him less?
We tried a different collar, leather with an adjustable chain. The collar doesn’t hurt him, but we think it gives him to much space around the neck… we don’t want him to slip out of it.

I had a Dobermann with a similar problem with collar (bald patches/flaky skin) & purchased a martingale collar made from hemp. I was very pleased with the result as it did not irritate the skin on her neck, & unlike a harness, did still allow me to given an effective correction for unacceptable behavior.
